Gary Fong



Genesis Photo Agency

Gary Fong is the Principal of Genesis Photo Agency. Genesis is a group of professional photographers with a dream of elevating the effectiveness of photography in evangelical and secular publications around the world.

Fong is also the Chief Photography Officer of WeArePhotographers.com, a new website dedicated to educating and advancing photography for professional and enthusiasts alike.

He is the former Director of Editorial Graphics Technology at the San Francisco Chronicle. Among many advanced technological projects he deployed, remote digital photo coverage and wireless transmissions from the field, virtual private network communications with access to the text and editing mainframe, satellite voice and data communications in the Middle East, and electronic photos, graphics, and text archive.

Fong joined the San Francisco Chronicle in 1975 as a Staff Photographer. He received countless awards for his groundbreaking coverage in the bay area. In 1987, he was promoted to the Director of Photography. In 1994, he was again promoted to the Director of Editorial Graphics Technology.

Fong’s coverage includes, 1989 Loma Prieta 7.1 Earthquake in San Francisco; St. Helens Volcano Eruption in Washington; Pope John Paul II, Visit to San Francisco; and the Assassination Attempt on President Gerald Ford in San Francisco.

His awards and recognitions include the Lifetime Achievement Award, Southern Short Course; Jurist for the Pulitzer Prize; Judge for the National Press Photographers Association, Pictures of the Year; twice named California Press Photographers Association, Photographer of the Year; five times winner of the San Francisco Bay Area Press Photographers Association, McLaughlin Award, Photographer of the Year; Instructor of Photojournalism, University of California at Berkeley and San Francisco State University; and President of Christians in Photojournalism.

 

Tom Kennedy



Kennedy Multimedia

Tom Kennedy is an internationally known visual journalist with 35 years of print and online journalism experience, including positions as Managing Editor for Multimedia at The Washington Post and Director of Photography for the National Geographic Magazine.  He has created, directed, and edited visual journalism projects that have earned Pulitzer Prizes, as well as EMMY, Peabody, and Edward R. Murrow awards.

Kennedy has been a featured speaker at some of the most prestigious journalism conferences and media workshops around the world, while also consulting to various academic institutions and international media companies on topics ranging from media management to multimedia storytelling and innovating within a corporate environment.

As the Managing Editor for Multimedia at washingtonpost.com, Kennedy conceptualized and developed its multimedia section, and created the first documentary video team to produce stories for a newspaper website.  His expertise in identifying, recruiting, and managing creative talent led to a continuous stream of professional awards over an 11-year period, while also generating 16 million page views per month for visual content and contributing revenue via high-CPM video pre-roll advertising.

Prior to joining washingtonpost.com, Kennedy was the Director of Photography at the National Geographic Society for ten years.  He directed the Photographic Division that produced all still photography for the Society, with the primary focus on National Geographic Magazine. 

While at the Philadelphia Inquirer as Deputy Graphics Director, Kennedy directed two projects that earned Pulitzer Prizes for feature photography.  Early in his newspaper career, he worked as a photojournalist at The Gainesville (FL) Sun and The Orlando (FL) Sentinel Star.

Kennedy serves on the Board of Advisors for The Knight Center for International Journalism within the School of Communication at the University of Miami, and on the Board of Visitors for the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.  He is also an advisor to visual journalism programs at the University of North Texas and University of Florida, as well as serving on the Board of Directors for the Eddie Adams Photo Workshop.

Kennedy graduated cum laude with a degree in journalism from the University of Florida.

 

Kim Komenich



Assistant Professor of Multimedia, SJSU

Kim Komenich is the Assistant Professor of Multimedia at San Jose State University.  He is also a former staff photographer and editor for the San Francisco Chronicle. He was awarded the 1987 Pulitzer Prize in Spot News Photography for photographs of the Philippine Revolution he made while on assignment for the San Francisco Examiner.

Komenich has photographed the ramifications of conflict in the Philippines, Vietnam, Guyana, El Salvador, the former Soviet Union, and most recently in Iraq, where photos from his three trips to the Sunni Triangle in 2005 earned him the Military Reporters and Editors' Association's 2006 Photography Award.

He has received the Distinguished Service Award from the Society of Professional Journalists, the 1987 World Press Photo News Picture Story Award, and three National Headliner Awards.

From fall, 1998 to winter, 2000 he was a visiting instructor at the University of Missouri, where he taught the capstone "Picture Story and the Photographic Essay" course. While at Missouri he received the Donald K. Reynolds Graduate Teaching Award. He is a 2005 recipient of the Clifton C. Edom Education Award from the National Press Photographers' Association. 

He was a 1993-94 John S. Knight Fellow at Stanford and a He was a fall, 2001 teaching fellow at The Center for Documentary Studies at U.C. Berkeley. He was a 2006-07 Dart Ochberg Fellow at the University of Washington's Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma.

In 2007 he received his MA in Journalism from the University of Missouri, where he studied the history and practice of multimedia photojournalism. He has taught multimedia photojournalism at Stanford Continuing Studies.
