Every year I go to a small gathering in Texas, where photographers congregate to hear from other photographers…about how their work is telling stories of quiet voices around the world.
It’s a place where egos are left outside the doors and photographers come in to share the passion of their work. It’s a place where photographers not only talk about how the light touches their subjects, but how the Light of their faith touched their hearts.
Among the faculty are Scott Kelby, Bill Fortney, Melanie Blanding, Jeremy Cowart, Stephen McGee, Bruce Strong, and Louis DeLuca. It’s a cross section of talent that spans generations and areas of photographic disciplines.
If you’d like to join us, the gathering is called the Southwestern Photojournalism Conference on the campus of the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Ft. Worth. It’s coming up fast, so mark your calendars for March 4 to 6, 2011. More info can be found at www.SWPJC.org.
The website posts, “The conference is for those who believe photojournalism to be a calling and the act of bearing witness to be important.”
I’ve met many life long friends at the gathering. I hope to meet you there as well.

Nice shoot! Putting the art on your hands show the inner view of creations. Just one tip, setting the focus on the eye is definitely important, specially when shooting a wide open aperture.

This conference is one where over the years has helped me to realize how to be a more successful photographer. You need to know your niche. When you pursue that you find you then need to know yourself. Sooner or later you come face to face with one's faith.I discovered this through the conference. Those who were speaking year after year talked about passion and service. They were all modeling their lives after a man who lived 2,000 years ago who said he came to serve and not be served.Egos are left at the door when people are focused on others and not all about themselves. I really suggest coming and discovering what I have--my faith makes me a better photographer. By the way you have got to see how much faith has impacted each of the speakers--go to their websites and you will see some awesome work. Stanley Leary
